Predator tools Hornet and Yorktown shovels

Just before my Ohio trip, about a month ago I received the Predator tools model 45 Hornet and the 42 Yorktown. It’s pretty senseless to write about the quality concerning anything made by George Lesche at Predator tools. What you need to know is this. Each piece is made by George using certified American steel then each piece is individually heat treated properly. The end result is the best designed, toughest tools available and I’ve not even seen anything close! One thing about quality you need to know when discussing any tool is heat treating. You saw above where I…

Nokta/Makro metal detector coils

If you listen to the All Metal Mode Podcast or have read many of my articles then you know I’m a big fan of Nokta/Makro metal detectors. One of the things that I admire about the company is they listen to us, the end users. There is probably no better example of this than the amount of coils they offer to us detectorists. Over the years, with different detectors I have had mixed results with aftermarket coils. Personally I have always had good luck using the coils offered by the manufacturer of the detector while I have had some okay…

Field hunting – was it ever there?

For many years now, my favorite form of metal detecting has been Relic hunting. Hunting the farm fields in Rural Ohio to be more specific but I’ve also spent some time in the woods relic hunting where long gone sites once where. The best way to quickly hunt down potential sites is overlaying the oldest maps you can find that show where houses, churches, mills and other buildings were. The best of these sites the structure was gone before pre plumbing and electric. Something that has perplexed me since I first begun overlaying maps and detecting these field sites is…

Do you need headphones for metal detecting?

This question has been around for a long time and I remember when I first started metal detecting I didn’t understand the need for headphones. But let me ask you this, have you ever been driving home from work and your favorite song comes on the radio? When that happens most of us start rolling up car windows, turning up the music, adjusting your car stereo because we want to hear it as best we can with the least amount of background noise. How hard is it to get into your favorite song when there are sirens, people honking and…

Living in an era of misinformation

I remember many years back watching a video on Youtube where a person had a board with several items attached to it and comparing two different detectors and how fast they recovered from each target. At the time I happened to own both detectors he was comparing and knew them both inside and out and it blew me away that he was putting information out there that was exactly opposite I had found after countless hours on each detector hunting in real world conditions. Just recently someone I was talking to said to me “do you know the guy who…

Nokta/Makro’s new Anfibio metal detector

At Detectival this year Nokta/Makro announced their new Anfibio series of detectors. It comes in multiple frequency 5,14 and 20 KHz, the Anfibio 14 and the Anfibio 19. If you have read any of my other articles I’ve done on Nokta/Makro or follow the all metal mode podcast you are fully aware that I am a huge fan of the company and their detectors. I probably talk about them too much to be honest but it’s been a lot of years since I’ve truly been excited about a metal detecting company. My opinion is they are the most innovative company…

Is it the end for Tesoro metal detectors?

Last night I noticed a message on my Instragram account and I was shocked that someone had contacted me to find out if I heard Tesoro laid everyone off. I couldn’t believe what I was reading! He then sent me a link to the post on the Treasurenet forum. I’m not going to name anyone in this article but this was coming from a reputable gentleman. I couldn’t find anything else so I took to Facebook to see if anyone else had heard. Some people couldn’t believe it while others said they had seen it coming but to this point…

Makro/Nokta huge announcements at Detectival

I knew Makro/Nokta was sponsoring Detectival and I was even privy to a couple of the announcements coming but I had no clue just how big it was going to be! Last year Minelab sponsored Detectival, I believe Dilek of Makro/Nokta wanted to beat last year’s performance of someone parachuting onto the field. Dilek was buried underground for 2 hours until someone “detected” her! I think she nailed it! As entertaining as that was let’s be honest, everyone wants to know why Makro/Nokta decided to sponsor the show. They must have a big announcement right? They didn’t have a…

The Detector/Prospector forum

Long before Facebook and social media I spent much of my internet time in different metal detecting forums. Over the years I’ve watched many grow out of control and into something I no longer enjoyed being a part of. I literally stopped going to one when they created a forum section to talk like a pirate, NO JOKE! That’s not bad enough for you? What about a section to discuss fast food, recipes and your favorite music? No thanks, I like a simple forum that keeps it on point. There is plenty to talk about in this hobby and closely…

Silver hoard found in Ohio

I don’t know of anyone that metal detects who doesn’t hope to find something truly amazing. All of us dream of that “find of a lifetime” and for a couple of guys in Ohio, that’s just what happened. Tom Dunn and Todd Aubry just found a silver hoard that is really incredible! Tom recently got permission from a longtime friend to metal detect his entire property  which includes a still standing farm house, a field and woods that once had activity including a few houses that are now long gone. Tom and Todd were really looking forward to this…
