Cold & snow keeping you from detecting?

Living somewhere that has bad winters with snow, ice and frozen ground can really be tough on us detectorists. Moving to Texas from Ohio a year and a half ago I don’t have that problem anymore but I sure do remember how hard it was on me. Throughout the years I found ways to keep myself busy in the winter by doing things that at least for me kept me from going crazy! Although these activities weren’t as fun as metal detecting itself I did find them all enjoyable and definitely helped me to pass the time and get ready…

Being brand loyal to a fault

I remember many years back when I was very new to the hobby. Back then I spent most of my time on one particular forum trying to take everything in I could and learning from everyone. Something that I will never forget that has stuck with me all these years was I quickly learned how brand loyal so many people are. That was twenty years ago and I still see it going on today. When Minelab first started to make a name for itself there were a few Explorer users in that particular forum and they would post some really…

Teknetics T2 SE detector – initial impressions

If you follow my blog you’ve possibly read my articles on the T2 Classic. When I say Classic I’m not sure that’s correct. This was one of the original T2’s and although it had some age on it I knew the whole life of the detector and in reality it had less than 20 hours of use on it. The T2 had always been stored properly without batteries and in a warm, dry place.  My reason for wanting the T2 is I was needing something here in Texas for parks. I wanted a VDI screen to quickly help let me…

First Texas lay-offs come as new facility announced

First Texas layoffs and new building A few weeks ago someone on my Facebook friends list was saying how they and several other were laid off from First Texas. For those who might not know, first Texas is made up of Fisher, Teknetics, Bounty hunter and night owl optics that I know of for sure and possibly other products.  You can’t help but feel for the people who were laid off, especially this close to Christmas but what really upset me was just a few days after hearing the news I seen a post on Teknetics Facebook page that said…

A trend in digging tools and shovels

A trend in digging tools and shovels I remember several years back when one of the metal detector manufactures came out with a new hand digger. Not long after it was on the market, one of my good customers who was very loyal to this particular brand, called me up and had to have one. I explained to him that I wouldn’t chance spending my money on something that is so brand new when Predator tools makes the best tools available. Being brand loyal he had to have one so I got one ordered and got it to him when…

Why I despise the metal detector manufactures right now

I have been metal detecting for over 20 years in this great hobby, I’ve helped countless people, teaching everything from how to set up and run their metal detector to overlaying maps and everything in between. I’ve had over 40 articles published in a few different metal detector magazines, a matter of fact every article I ever wrote and submitted to a magazine was published. 8 months ago I started a metal detecting podcast and just 5 months ago I started this blog. I am no one in this hobby and I am perfectly ok with that, when I look…

Predator tools model 75C digging tool review

I thought when I got the model 85 digging tool years back that it was the best hand digging tool ever made. I have really abused it hard over the years and it has taken everything I could throw at it from cutting through nasty roots, prying and even kicking on it to budge rocks. I actually got the model 85 for Christmas many years back and it got put on the shelf for a while because first, I thought I was happy with my digging tools and second, It didn’t have much of an edge on it and…

Tesoro Outlaw metal detector review

Several months back I did a review on the Tesoro Outlaw that was from memory that I actually had done a few years back. Now that I have one and just got back from an Ohio trip to metal detect and visit family I thought I would do another article/review on the Outlaw. This trip was more about the Tesoro Tejon but I only had the 10×12 coil for it so I would use the Outlaw with a smaller coil when the iron debris was excessive. My first time out I took it to a field site where an…

Tesoro Tejon metal detector review

Just a few months ago I traded a metal detector I had for a Tesoro Tejon with a 12×10 wide scan coil. With only a few hours on the Tejon I packed up and was off to Ohio for metal detecting and family time. I really wanted to put some time in on the Tejon and learn it in the setting I’m most comfortable with which is relic hunting. My favorite thing to do is overlay old maps and find where houses once were that is nothing but a farm field now.   I arrived in Ohio and was disappointed…

Whites close to announcing new metal detector

What an exciting few weeks it has been in the metal detecting world. The AT Max’s have been getting shipped out to customers, this past weekend Minelab announced two new metal detectors, the Equinox 600/800 and two new pin pointers, the 15 and 35 with the 35 having Iron Ferrous tone ID! Last night, just a few hours before I went live on my podcast, all metal mode, someone alerted me to a post by Dominique Ivy Da Silva showing a mysterious new Whites metal detector in the back ground. Not much to see but Whites fans were able…
