Finding sights by reading the land

If you have ever talked to me you know that I love field hunting. If you listen to Josh Kimmels podcast, beyond sight and sound, you have probably caught one of the episodes I have done about field hunting. It’s something I have enjoyed doing for years and it is my favorite type of metal detecting to do. What is field hunting? Field hunting is finding old sites, long gone that are just farm fields now. I don’t just pick a field, get permission and go walk it hoping to find something. I overlay old maps, talk to farmers about…

In depth- How to overlay maps

This article is something I have wanted to do for a long time but wasn’t sure how to go about it. I knew it would be difficult and before even I started typing here I have about four hours in getting all the pictures together and figuring out exactly how I want to do it to make sure it’s easy to understand. I don’t know how well this will work but follow along and I think by the end you should have enough understanding to do it on your own. This is my method. There are other methods out there…

Peter Schichtel & Joe Jorgensen discuss the “snake pit”

Last night was the second time Bob and I have had these guys on the show. If you listen to the podcast you will quickly understand why we love having these two on and why we will have them back again. Peter and Joe are a wealth of information but they also work so well together! These two knock it out of the park when it comes to telling a story. Just minutes into the first show Bob and I did with them, we had people in chat telling us we needed to have these guys back on.. yea, they are…

Tesoro’s Tiger Shark and Sand Shark

I started my day off with Tesoro’s Sand Shark. Stephanie went with me and wanted to try metal detecting and I thought what a better place to start than in the water! I only have the one sand scoop but I was hoping we could stick close and share but unfortunately the beach isn’t sand. It is grass that leads up to about a 2 foot drop into the swimming area that is gravel. The time spent digging in the gravel was just too much for both of us to share one scoop. I put away the Sand Shark and…

Predator Tools legendary Model 85 digging tool

For years I used cheap, stainless steel digging tools. Matter of fact I had 4 of them! Why so many you might ask? They would get dull quick and constantly needed sharpened. I found myself with several good spots with a lot of gravel mixed in and I would dull all four of those hand diggers within a few hours to the point it was almost impossible to dig. I was happy (or so I thought) and I just could never see myself spending the 50 dollars for a hand digger! Several years back I got a Predator tools Model…

Last nights podcast 7/17/2017

Peter Schichtel and Joe Jorgensen were scheduled to be on the show last night but unfortunately they had to re-schedule and will be on this next week. We have some people we want to get on the show and Peter gave me plenty of notice but Bob and I thought it would be a good time to take a break from having a guest and take calls. Josh Kimmel was our first caller and it was nice to have him on as always and he remained on the whole time. Josh has been instrumental in our success and without him…

Metal Detecting off the beaten path

When I first started metal detecting many years back I learned a really valuable lesson that has resulted in many good finds over the years and I think is worth sharing. I was metal detecting a school from the 1920s and I hadn’t found much there after many hunts. I kept going back because it was close and convenient. I had known several people in the local metal detecting community who had hunted it but when I had nothing else to do I would metal detect there, determined to find a few keepers. One day I was about to give…

Digger Charlie and Jay Mo on All Metal Mode

I think I am going to start something new after my girlfriend Steph made a great suggestion. After each podcast do an article highlighting what was discussed and talk about the show. I think it is a great idea and could be a great way to get feedback on how we can make the show better. Before we go live we always have our guest(s) call in earlier so we can test the audio and make sure everything is working well. It’s also a good time for us to get to know our guests and hopefully loosen everyone up. Last…

Josh Kimmel Fundraiser

I have had the great opportunity to know Josh for several years. It started with the Buckeye Treasure Hunter forum I built many years back. Josh was a regular member on there but I didn’t really get to know Josh until he called me up one day and I have considered him a friend ever since. Believe it or not I have never met Josh in person, yet he is one of my closest friends and we have spent countless hours talking about metal detecting and everything else you can imagine. He is one of the most passionate people I…

Your local historical society

I have heard of people visiting their local historical society and coming away with some great leads. A matter of fact just in the last few weeks Bob Washabaugh and I were talking about a time he stopped in at one and got a few places to metal detect that day. Sadly enough I have never done it myself in all these years of metal detecting. I don’t really know why other than I am certainly an introvert although I come out of my shell fairly well when it comes to metal detecting whether it’s meeting new people, doing our…
